An exhibition to mark the Union of Parliaments in 1707

An exhibition to mark the Union of Parliaments in 1707 will open at the Scottish Parliament, where visitors to the Parliament can view it.

Act Of Union

The exhibition features five key documents: the Scottish and English copies of the Treaty concluded in 1706, known as the Articles of Union; the Acts of the two parliaments consenting to union, and the ‘Exemplification of Union’, an illuminated copy of the Act passed at Westminster, which Queen Anne gifted to the Scottish Parliament that year. Three of the five documents are on loan from the National Archives of Scotland.

It will be the first time that the Scottish and English copies of the treaty have been displayed side by side in Scotland since they were signed 300 years ago. The treaties will be displayed as part of the free public exhibition, entitled ‘Making the Act of Union 1707’, and will run in Holyrood’s main hall from Friday 21st September to Sunday 18th November 2007.

Find out more about the Treaty of Union and other aspects of the history of the Scottish Parliament, in the History section of Scottish Parliament website.

'Making the Act of Union 1707' is a unique opportunity to see historic documents that are not normally on display to the public, and have never before been seen together.
