A NEW website about Edinburgh Castle's famous One o'Clock Gun and the time ball on Calton Hill has been set up.

History group the One o'Clock Gun Association created the site using an £8000 lottery grant.

Already featured on the site is a picture diary of Sergeant James Shannon "The Cannon" preparing to fire the gun.

But the organisers want more images, and are appealing for members of the public to contact them if they have pictures of the gun in action. They are particularly keen to get images from between the first and second world wars.

Part of the site will also link with other time guns and time balls across the world.

Association secretary George Robinson said: "People are fascinated by this sort of thing all around the world.

"They'll see the story about Edinburgh on the site and they'll want to come and see it for real."

The website address is www.1oclockgun.com [3].
