A CALL has been made for brave sailors from across the Lothians to enter this year's Linlithgow cardboard boat race.

The event, which is being held on Sunday by the town's Union Canal Society (LUCS) as part of its annual fun day, will see around a dozen teams brave the waters as they compete for prizes.

Last year, 11 rafts entered the race and organisers have called for even more teams to take part this year.

LUCS spokeswoman Eleanor Carfrae said: "People have been picking up entry forms but we never know until the last minute how many teams are taking part as they usually turn up on the day.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll get a good day for it.

"This is not a money-making exercise for LUCS. It's our way of thanking families in the town for supporting us."

British Waterways has provided funding for professional entertainers The Pirates and the King and Queen of the Teddy Bears to mingle with guests at the fun day.

The International Rescue team from Grangemouth will be at the event and the Sloan Rangers Jazz Band, a Punch and Judy show and a host of charity stalls will also be set up on the banks of the canal.
