Increasing access to Calton Hill is vital

CALTON HILL is in line for new signs and interpretation boards thanks to a £20,000 grant from the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust.

It is part of a project to improve access to the hill, and help visitors make the most of the famous landmark.

The signs are expected to go up within the next few months. They will explain the history of buildings such as the National Monument and the Old Observatory. The hill is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its wildlife.

A spokesman for Edinburgh World Heritage said: "Increasing access to Calton Hill and explaining its importance is vital for Edinburgh World Heritage.

"The outstanding panoramic view it provides enables everyone to appreciate the city's unique contrasting character.

He added: "Calton Hill should be a place for everyone to visit."
