The incident happened at around 12.30pm, at Shandwick Place, near Coates Crescent.
The 35-year-old victim was walking east along Shandwick Place when she was grabbed by a woman, who snatched the purse from her hand.
She shouted for help as the suspect ran off, but before she could make her escape she was grabbed by a man in a kilt opposite Manor Place.
The man, who wore glasses and had a moustache, had a brief struggle with the suspect, and he managed to recover the purse. The woman then ran off in the direction of Haymarket.
The suspect is described as white, 5ft 3ins, with a slim build, shoulder length brown hair in ponytails, and with two front teeth missing. She was wearing a white top and jeans.
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: 'We would like anyone who witnessed the purse being snatched, or who saw the struggle take place between the kilted man and the suspect, to contact police.
'We would also like anyone who recognises the description of the suspect to get in touch.'
Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
