A man has been charged in connection with the disappearance of schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton, who went missing in 1991, police have revealed.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the man was arrested, cautioned and charged on Saturday.

15-year-old Vicky was last seen waiting for a bus in Bathgate, West Lothian, as she made her way home from a night out.

Police investigating her disappearance recently searched the former home of a man called Peter Tobin in Bathgate.

Forensics experts took three weeks to search the property before scientists analysed DNA results.

The missing teenager had been returning from Livingston, where she had been staying with her sister, to her home in Redding, near Falkirk.

She had changed buses in Bathgate and was last seen standing at a bus stop in the town.

Vicky's mother Janette died in 1993 without knowing what had happened to her daughter.

The family have said in the past they believe she is dead.

Speaking shortly after the police announcement, a relative said they were waiting for detectives to fully brief them on developments and declined to make any further comment.

A police spokesman said: "With reference to the investigation into the disappearance of Vicky Hamilton, which occurred on 10th February 1991, officers of Lothian and Borders Police have arrested, cautioned and charged a male in connection with the matter and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal."
