The meditative poetics of seven experimental films provide fresh insight into the representation of British landscape.
'Eco-eye' presents the particular ecological sensibility of the short film within a series of place-based works characterised by an open and inventive attitude to image, sound and music.
Sky Hills Sheep Water Grass
Paul Bush, UK 1978, Silent, 7 min, 16mm
The film attempts an inventory of objects to be seen in a small area of country. Lacking the specificity of language the film avoids the neutrality of a list or catalogue by hinting all the time at connections, events and narrative.
Cylch yr Ynys
Sharon Morris, UK 1992, 18 min, 16mm
Cylch yr Ynys, translated here as 'Circle of the Island', takes as its subject the island of Skokholm off the west Wales coast, one of a small group of bird sanctuaries. Images filmed during the passing seasons reveal changes in vegetation and bird life observed through a repetition of viewpoints. The text refers to this breaking of myth through the acts of looking and listening.
Hoy

A poetic documentary exploring the terrain of the remote island of Hoy in Orkney. A young man encounters its deserted valleys and crumbling crofts, his body providing a contrast to its skin and bones, a key to its spirit of desolation. View William Raban, UK 1970, 4 min, 16mm One of a series of films of a river filmed over one whole day in winter using a static camera. The film alternates from recording in time-lapse (one frame every ten seconds) to running through the camera at 24 fps (regular speed).
Vide Voce (The Three's in the Four)

The idea for this work is founded in the experience of the Scottish landscape which is often threatening and always powerful. The threat to this seemingly unchangeable presence was tragically underlined by the Chernobyl disaster. Partridge invited David Cunningham, composer and music producer, together with Mary Phillips, singer and performer, to collaborate with him on this project. Waterland Matt Lipsey & David Bickley, UK 1988, 6 min, Video A quiet meditative work, Waterland paints a subdued portrait of the salt marsh, condenses its atmosphere and its timeless rhythm.
Aspect
Emily Richardson, UK 2004, 9 min, 16mm & Video
Aspect was filmed in a forest over the period of a year. Using photographic techniques, such as time-lapse and long exposures on single film frames, the forest year is condensed into a few minutes.
