Soldier Meets Citizen: a public debate

General Sir Mike Jackson and academic panel discuss the moral and ethical challenges posed by war and security today.
“Soldier Meets Citizen: The Ethics of War in Theory and Practice” will be held in George Square Lecture Theatre on Thursday, 4th December at 6pm.
This stimulating debate celebrates the launch of the Just World Institute in the School of Social and Political Science.
The event will be introduced by Vice Principal Professor Lorraine Waterhouse.
The debate
Since the Iraq war the relationship between the military and society has become strained.
The legitimacy of the use of military force by liberal democratic governments has been called into question more then ever.
General Sir Mike Jackson has been forthright in his defence of the common solider and the military against changing political priorities and demands.
The panel
This event will present General Sir Mike Jackson in conversation with two of the University’s internationally-recognised experts on the ethics and morality of war:
- Professor Cecile Fabré, political philosopher
- Professor Oliver O’Donovan, theologian
This will be followed by a debate between the speakers and the audience, chaired by Alan Little, BBC Foreign Affairs Correspondent and Edinburgh alumnus.
