1887: The foundation stone of the Edinburgh Central Library on George IV Bridge was laid by Andrew Carnegie. Edinburgh has had a strong literary tradition throughout history and became the world's first UNESCO City of Literature in 2004.

The 18th century Paisley weaver and songwriter wrote over 100 songs of a quality comparable to Burns.
