Traverse Theatre, Cambridge Street, Scotland's new writing theatre

Today in History

1788: The first steamboat experiment was held on Dalswinton Loch. Robert Burns was farming at Ellisland, just outside Dumfries, when he was invited by his landlord, Patrick Miller, to go out in a small experimental steamboat. The boat, which was fitted with an engine designed by William Symington, was the first paddle-propelled steamboat in the world.

The MCO has performed regularly and with critical acclaim to audiences in Edinburgh and many parts of Scotland for almost 30 years.

A tradition of imaginative programming and exciting performances has given the Orchestra a unique place in Scottish musical life.

In recognition of its promotion of contemporary music, the Orchestra has received several Awards for Initiative from the Performing Right Society and was selected in 1999 as an initial participant of the 'Adopt-a-Composer' scheme launched by the PRS in conjunction with the Society for the Promotion of New Music.

This season's programme follows the Orchestra's successful tradition of blending classical masterpieces with exciting new music.

As usual, the concerts feature a succession of notable soloists.

To join the MCO mailing list please email Spedding Micklem.

Experienced players interested in joining the Orchestra should email the following players:
Strings: Fiona Coutts

The Orchestra is occasionally available to give concerts for music societies at locations within about 120 miles of Edinburgh. If your society is interested, and you wish to explore possibilities informally, please contact the Orchestra Chairman, David Rimer.
