1736: The "Porteous Riot" took place in Edinburgh. The Tolbooth prison was broken into, several prisoners freed, and Captain John Porteous was dragged out and hanged. Porteous had been granted a Royal reprieve from a death sentence imposed when he ordered his men to fire on a rowdy mob.

Historic Scotland   Uncovering Holyrood Past
13:00 Wednesday, July 02 2008

The Rangers at Holyrood Park are hosting a series of free walks where visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather and the stunning setting of the Park.

Ranger Service established in 1999 to help visitors to Holyrood Park and Linlithgow Peel

The team at the Education Centre have developed a series of walks that focus on the history of the park, and the nature and animals that live there.

Every Wednesday throughout July to 13th August at Arthur’s Secrets visitors can join a member of the Ranger team to discover the fascinating world of Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat.

There will be the chance to uncover the Park’s turbulent past, created by fire and ice, and learn more about the people that lived and worked the land thousands of years ago.

Visitors can join the Rangers for a summer stroll on Wednesday 16th July, with key archaeological and natural points of interest, in various areas of the park, highlighted to those on the Evening Walk.

Nicky Pettigrew, Historic Scotland Ranger, said;

“Living in the city can mean a hectic pace of life for many residents in Edinburgh, so at Holyrood Park this summer we are encouraging people of all ages to take a step back and enjoy the nature and wildlife that inhabit the Park.”

Arthur’s Secrets takes place every Wednesday throughout July to 13th August from 13.00 to 15.00 each day. Visitors are asked to meet at the Holyrood Park Information Centre (the lodge near the Parliament).

Evening Walk is on Wednesday 16th July from 18.00 to 19.30.
