Today in History

1823: Charles Mackintosh began manufacturing waterproof coats. Mackintosh, born in Glasgow, was devoted to science for which he gave up his first job as a clerk. He began experimenting on the by-products of tar and discovered that one such by-product, Naphtha, made India rubber soluble.

Spokes Sunday Bike Rides
10:00 Tuesday, April 01 2008
First Sunday of every month.
Meet at 10am, at the Usher Hall, Lothian Road.

Free guided bike rides along cycles paths and quiet roads to destinations in The Lothians, Fife or The Borders.

Come along and experience the glorious Scottish countryside first hand with friendly people.

Rides are fairly gentle, 35 to 45 miles or so. Lunch at pub/cafe, or bring picnic.

Spokes Logo

Normally return to Edinburgh at around 4pm in Winter, 5pm in Spring and Autumn and a bit later in Summer, bit no later than 6pm.

We show the way, help with mechanical malfunctions, wait for the less speedy and try to ensure all have a wonderful time! Cycle carefully and considerately.

You are entirely responsible for your own safety.

Children under 14, or not used to roads, may only come with an adult.

Light showers won't put us off, but persistent bad weather may mean cancellation.

Stuart has led the Spokes Rides for over 9 years, and has 10 years experience of organising and leading bike rides.

Further details can be found on the Event website, or by phoning Stuart.

The cycling organisations (Spokes, Sustrans, CTC, Cycling Scotland & The Bike Station) are working together to organise TryCycling events and stalls at some of the summer festivals, as well as introductory rides throughout the year.

All the rides are FREE, but booking is recommended.

We want to put you in touch with some of the services that can help you start cycling, and hear about the things you think will help you and your family to ride more often.
