1814:
'Waverley', by Sir Walter Scott, was published. Waverley was Scott's first novel, and written mainly as a way of proving himself a superior literary talent to Byron. Although it was published anonymously, it was an open secret who the author was. The book was a runaway success and Scott became regarded as the leading author in Europe.

West Port residents faced another blow when water cut off
Scottish Water said it was notified of the problem at 10am yesterday and engineers were "working around the clock" to repair the damaged valve. It comes after two collapses at the demolition site at the former post office building in West Port, which led to residents being evacuated. It is believed the water supply was back to normal yesterday evening.
City centre councillor David Beckett said the water in the area had been off since 5pm on Thursday. He said: "I received quite a few complaints about it. The work going on there made it more difficult to fix the valve." A spokesperson for Scottish Water apologised for the problem, adding: "Bottled water supplies have been made available for those people requesting it." Source: Edinburgh Evening News
