A CITY wildlife reserve is to open to the public for the first time since a £7000 overhaul.

Volunteer Sam Ranscombe said: "Johnston Terrace is a hidden gem." The open day takes place on Saturday 7th June.

City garden blooms after Lottery boost

THE Scottish Wildlife Trust threw open its wildlife reserve in Edinburgh's Johnston Terrace so the public could see the transformation brought about thanks to a £7000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund's "Breathing Places" scheme.

Visitors took the chance to learn more about the wildlife on the reserve and how to create wildlife-rich habitats in their gardens.

Over the last 12 months the reserve has been planted with native nectar-rich plants to encourage bees and other pollinating insects, new homes for wildlife such as bat and bird boxes have been put in place.

Sam Ranscombe, volunteer reserve convener, said: "Johnston Terrace is a hidden gem."
