A 35-year-old man has died after he was struck by a lorry in Edinburgh this morning (Tuesday April 29th).

The collision happened at around 9.30am, at the junction of Nicolson Street and West Richmond Street.

The cyclist was turning left into Nicolson Street from West Richmond Street when he was struck by the lorry. He suffered serious injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is underway to establish the cause of the collision, and the driver of the lorry is assisting police with their enquiries. Police are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch.

He is 35-year-old Iain Wilson, from the Duddingston area of Edinburgh.

Police are issuing a fresh appeal for witnesses to the collision, which happened at the junction of Nicolson Street and West Richmond Street at around 9.30am.

Appeal follows death of 35-year-old cyclist

Police investigating the death of a cyclist who was struck by a lorry in Edinburgh on Tuesday (April 29th) morning are making a fresh appeal for witnesses.

35-year-old Iain Wilson, from the Duddingston area of Edinburgh, died in the collision at the junction of Nicolson Street and West Richmond Street at around 9.30am.

Officers are keen to talk to anyone who may have seen him before the accident, in the Holyrood Park, Pleasance and West Richmond Street areas between 9.15am and 9.30am that morning.

He was wearing a red and grey helmet, red and grey jacket, and blue jeans. He was carrying a blue rucksack, and was riding a red mountain bike.

It is believed a woman was seen walking north in Nicolson Street towards West Richmond Street before the collision, and stopped to help him when it happened.

Police are very keen to talk to this woman in particular. She is described as being white, in her 60s or 70s, and was wearing a beige, or light-coloured jacket.

A police spokeswoman said: 'This was a busy time of day, and we are asking anyone who may have been in the area and saw the cyclist en route to get in touch.

'We know a woman stopped to help the victim when he was struck by the lorry, and we are appealing directly for her to come forward, as she may have information which could help our enquiries.'

Family pay tribute to a "fantastic guy"

The family of Iain Wilson, who was killed in a road collision in Edinburgh on Tuesday (April 29th), have requested that the following statement be released to the media.

The family of Dr Iain Wilson, the Edinburgh cyclist killed on Tuesday in Newington, have paid tribute to 'a fantastic guy'.

Dr Wilson was an award-winning neuroscientist involved in post doctoral research at Edinburgh University's Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems, investigating the mechanisms of learning and memory.

He was brought up in Alabama and studied Psychology at Haverford College in Pennsylvania before completing his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Kuopio in Finland in 2005. His particular focus was on the ways the aging brain processes spatial relationships. He took up his current post at Edinburgh University three years ago.

Iain was an enthusiastic outdoor sportsman, regularly running, cycling and hillwalking, once 'bagging' a Munro the day after completing the London Marathon. He was also an active member of Edinburgh University's Orienteering Club. Iain spoke five languages, three of them fluently.

While in Finland, Iain met his wife Silvia Gratz-Wilson. They had settled happily into life in Scotland, setting up home in Edinburgh, close to some of Iain's family.

His family said: 'We are devastated to lose one who was as funny and fun-loving as he was kind and thoughtful. It is very difficult to come to terms with what has happened. Iain was a fantastic guy, caring, always interested and enthusiastic and the first to offer help to others. He was devoted to his wife, his family and his work.

'Iain loved to be outside enjoying the world around him and lived his life with gusto. He put a lot into it, and he got a lot out of it. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

'Iain died on his regular commute to work by bike. We would be grateful if anyone who saw the accident would come forward and talk to the Police. It can't bring Iain back, but it might help us to understand what has happened, and help prevent a similar accident in future.'
