William Rankine, the engineer and physicist, was born. Rankine is noted for his work in thermodynamics. He devised the 'Rankine Cycle', a theoretical ideal process for the operation of turbines and steam engines, in which a condensing vapour is the working fluid. He served as the first President of the Institute of Engineers in Scotland.

Bringing together the best design, technology and drinks
A CAPITAL restaurant and bar is the best new venue in Scotland after picking up a top food and drink industry award. Abstract, on Castle Terrace, was named Best New Scottish Restaurant at the Theme Bar and Restaurant Awards on Tuesday. The awards are designed to honour excellence among bar professionals and their venues, bringing together the best of design, technology and drinks. The restaurant will go through to the UK awards final in London in June.
