1870:
David Octavius Hill, pioneering Scottish photographer, died. Born in 1802, Hill is often credited with being the first person to use photography as an aid to painting. Together with Robert Adamson he produced more than 1,500 photo-portraits of Scotland's great and good.

It might not sound ideal for clothes but the opposite is true
A CLOTHES store in the Grassmarket has unveiled a line of products made from bamboo. Big Ideas, on the West Bow, is selling a range of tunics and cardigans which have been made using the oriental plant. A spokesman for the Grassmarket traders association said: "Bamboo might not sound like ideal for clothing but Big Ideas will convince you the opposite is true." Previous Tollcross Articles
