Scottish novelist AJ Cronin was born in Cardross, Dumbartonshire. He trained as a doctor, served in World War One and then set up a practice in South Wales, which formed the basis for his most famous stories published as Adventures of the Black Bag which formed the basis for the TV and radio series Dr Finlay's Casebook.

Woman knocked to the ground and robbed in Tollcross
The man snatched the 19-year-old's handbag near the cash machine on Earl Grey Street at about 12.45am on Monday 31st March 2008, before heading off down Lothian Road in a silver sporty-style car. The suspect is described as being Asian, around 5ft 7in tall, with short dark hair and a grey long-sleeved top. A police spokeswoman said: "Although she's not been seriously hurt, this has been a frightening experience for the young woman involved." Previous Tollcross Articles
