William Rankine, the engineer and physicist, was born. Rankine is noted for his work in thermodynamics. He devised the 'Rankine Cycle', a theoretical ideal process for the operation of turbines and steam engines, in which a condensing vapour is the working fluid. He served as the first President of the Institute of Engineers in Scotland.

 A motorcyclist was injured after he swerved to avoid a tape that had been strung across an Edinburgh street. 
The incident happened at around 4.30am on Sunday (March 9th), in Nicolson Street, near to the junction with West Richmond Street. The 45-year-old motorcyclist was riding his Honda CBX 750 south when he noticed the tape, which was attached to two lampposts on either side of the street, at neck height. Because he didn't spot the tape until very late, he was forced to fall off his motorbike to avoid it. As a result he injured his shoulder, and had to attend Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment. His bike was also damaged. A police spokesman said: 'Although the motorcyclist was riding at only 30mph, he was still lucky not to have been seriously injured as a result of being forced to fall off his bike. 'Whoever carried out this stunt may have thought it was a prank, but their actions could have resulted in someone being badly hurt. 'Anyone who was in Nicolson Street in the early hours of Sunday morning and saw the tape being strung across the street, or who has any information that can help us trace whoever is responsible, should contact police immediately.'
