A TEENAGER has died after being hit by a car in the city centre.

The 16-year-old boy was knocked down by a silver Renault heading towards Gorgie around 9.30pm yesterday.

The road was closed for two hours as accident investigators examined the scene.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders police today said the driver of the car was co-operating fully and the incident was a tragic accident.

He said: "There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this. In accordance with procedure we are seeking witnesses, but the driver stopped at the scene and the vehicle has been seized.

"We are still keen to speak to people who saw this, but there is nothing to suggest any wrong doing."

Locals said they were shocked by the accident. Marlynne Bullen, owner of Delish sandwich shop Dalry Road: "It's a really bad road. There was a wee girl across the road involved in some sort of collision with a car not so long ago. She wasn't hurt but she got a good fright.

"They're meant to be putting in a pedestrian crossing. The pavement was supposed to be fenced off with railings."

Shahad Nadeem, of Premier convenience store on Dalry Road, said: "I saw ambulances coming and heard a lot of noise but didn't see the accident itself."

It is the second accident in which a teenager has died after being hit by a vehicle in the area in recent weeks.

Tynecastle High pupil David Bendo, 17, was on his lunch break in McLeod Street having just finished his exams when he was hit by a tipper truck last month.

Witnesses of the incident said the driver was unaware he had hit the teenager and continued 50 yards until a bystander waved him down outside the Hearts ticket office.

Anyone with any information on last night's accident is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.

Schoolboy killed by car was days from 17th birthday

A SCHOOLBOY who was knocked down and killed would have celebrated his 17th birthday this weekend.

Stuart Brockie, of Grove Street, was hit by a car in Dalry Road at 9.30pm last Friday.

His family were planning to celebrate his birthday on Saturday but will now be attending his funeral instead.

His mother Jackie has paid tribute to "her bold and big hearted" son. She said: "Stuart was bold, brass and loud, people, friends and family that really knew him know what I mean.

"He had feelings, a big heart, the biggest heart that went out to everybody and anybody.

"Stuart was an extraordinary character, different from all the rest and always did his best.

"The day we lay him down to rest, hopefully on his birthday March 15th, we'll do our best to make you proud son." The tragedy is the second to hit his dad Gary in less than six months. His three-month-old daughter Jasmine died in November.

Stuart was out with friends when he was hit by a silver Renault car.

The St Augustine's pupil was hoping to be a hairdresser when he left school and was an incredibly popular figure with over 600 friends listed on his social networking site. Friends and family have left pages of poignant tributes on his website.

His step sister Kimberley Burnett wrote: "You don't understand how much you have meant to me over so many years.

"Never mind a step brother you were like my real brother, always there when I wanted to talk to you and giving me the best advice in the world. Best step brother I could ever ask for."
