New obstacles for Usher Hall revamp

This work means the project will take longer to complete

THE £30 million revamp of the Usher Hall has been hit by fresh delays.

Engineers have decided the foundations of the A-listed venue need to be reinforced to support a new glass wing, the most visible part of the refurbishment scheme.

And "unexpected rock formations" have also meant deeper pilings are required.

No definite date has been set for completion of the project beyond a general target of spring next year.

But officials say the hall will be available for the Edinburgh International Festival in August.

And they say the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra should also be able to go ahead with their winter programme. A council spokesman said: "This work means the project will take longer to fully complete, but there is no concern at thus stage over the SCO and RSNO's use of the venue for this coming winter season.

"However, we will not be taking additional bookings due to the risk of further delays and costs."
