Today in History

1747: American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Man injured after collision on pedestrian crossing

Police are trying to trace a woman driver whose car was in collision with a pedestrian in Edinburgh city centre.

Lothian and Borders Police press release

The accident happened at about 11.15am on Wednesday January 30 as the 38-year-old man was walking across the pedestrian crossing at the junction of North Castle Street and George Street.

The driver, who was in a dark-coloured family saloon possibly a Ford, stopped her car and got out to speak to the man. He said that he was alright and she drove off.

However the man subsequently went to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for a check up and it was discovered he had an injury to his elbow and neck.

The woman is described as being white, aged between 30 and 40 years, with shoulder length brown hair and in casual dress.

A police spokesman said: 'We would like to trace the woman motorist so we can establish exactly what happened.

'She stopped her car after the collision but after checking the man was alright, which he confirmed, she then drove away.'

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
