The Jazz Singer opened today in 1927. Although the film was not the first 'talkie' picture it was a major landmark and ushered in an era of synchronised sound. Directed by Alan Crosland and staring Al Jolson, the movie made profits of $3.5 million at the box-office.

SHOPPERS in Tollcross are set to benefit from around 50 new short-term parking bays. Council chiefs have unveiled plans to create a mixture of pay-and-display and shared-use bays around the Tollcross area after lobbying from the local traders association. The plans involve changing bays on seven streets in Tollcross, including Gilmore Place and Brougham Street.
