1747:
American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Items include gold Elvis record and framed signed picture
Police in Edinburgh are 'All Shook Up' after recovering several items of rare Elvis memorabilia. The items, which include a gold Elvis record, a framed signed picture of 'The King', and another framed picture with cheques and show bills, were found during a recent house search in the centre of the city. Also recovered was a framed scrap piece of paper featuring the lyrics to the classic hit 'American Pie', apparently written by the artist Don McLean himself. A police spokesman said: 'These value of the items is not known, but they look genuine and if they have been stolen then we hope that the original owner will recognise them and contact us. 'It's not a case of 'Now or Never', but we certainly hope to reunite these rare items with their owner as soon as possible.' Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
