Today in History

1927: The Jazz Singer opened today in 1927. Although the film was not the first 'talkie' picture it was a major landmark and ushered in an era of synchronised sound. Directed by Alan Crosland and staring Al Jolson, the movie made profits of $3.5 million at the box-office.

Protesters have vowed to stage a demonstration

PROTESTERS have vowed to stage a demonstration in a last-ditch attempt to convince councillors to throw out the controversial Caltongate project.

Around 50 people gathered at Old St Paul's Church Hall, on Jeffrey Street, last night to discuss ways to halt the £300 million development, ahead of a council meeting next Wednesday.

Catriona Grant, of the Canongate Community Forum's Stop the Demolitions, said: "There is only a week to go so we need to focus our energies and decide the best way forward before the meeting."

The event was attended by Edinburgh SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville, city centre councillor David Beckett, alongside members of the Old Town Community Council and local residents.

It was decided that members would write to community councils to gather support.

The plans involve a cultural quarter, a five-star hotel and conference centre, office blocks, 200 homes, bars, restaurants and cafés, as well as a new street linking Princes Street to Holyrood.

A placard workshop will take place on Saturday.
