1747: American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Lothian and Borders Police press release

Police are hunting two youths after they robbed a 20-year-old man in Edinburgh yesterday evening (22nd May).

The man was walking in Slateford Road about 11pm when he was threatened with a knife before having his mobile telephone and wallet stolen.

The attackers are both described as male, white, and both having short fair hair.

One is 13 to 14 years, 5ft 4ins tall, slim build and wearing dark tracksuit trousers and a white tracksuit style top.

The second suspect is described as being 18 to 20-years-old, 5'10-11" tall, clean shaven and wearing a dark coloured tracksuit and white trainers.

Both were seen to run off in the direction of Gorgie Park Close immediately after the attack.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and who maybe saw the attackers or who recognises their descriptions.

A police spokesman said: "We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw the incident to come forward and contact the police.

"We would also appeal to anyone who recognises the description of the culprits to contact the police."

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
