American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Passes go on sale for Dawn of the Dead in early February
HORROR film fans are expected to flock to the Filmhouse in Lothian Road next month when passes for this year’s Dawn of the Dead festival go on sale.
The event, now in its 15th year, has yet to unveil its line-up, but will include all-night screenings of classic and contemporary films. For the past three years the event has sold out in a matter of weeks. Passes go on sale at the Filmhouse Box office in early February and the festival takes place from April 24th-27th.
