1870:
David Octavius Hill, pioneering Scottish photographer, died. Born in 1802, Hill is often credited with being the first person to use photography as an aid to painting. Together with Robert Adamson he produced more than 1,500 photo-portraits of Scotland's great and good.

Inspector joined Lothian and Borders Police in 1979
A NEW police inspector has been appointed to oversee operations in the south of Edinburgh.
Sector inspector Glenn Milne has taken the reins for the Howdenhall area of the city, replacing former inspector Stephen Paul. Inspector Milne joined Lothian and Borders Police in 1979 and has spent his service performing plain clothes, licensing, traffic enforcement, CID inquiry teams and control room duties, as well as community beat duties in Morningside and Gorgie. He has also worked as a sergeant in the Borders. Source: Edinburgh Evening News
