American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Tollcross-based Dance and Music courses start in January
CLASSES in Bollywood dancing and traditional Indian sitar playing are to start in the New Year.
The Tollcross-based Indian Dance and Music Collective has announced courses starting on January 18th. The group was set up to promote South Asian culture. Source: Edinburgh Evening News
