William Rankine, the engineer and physicist, was born. Rankine is noted for his work in thermodynamics. He devised the 'Rankine Cycle', a theoretical ideal process for the operation of turbines and steam engines, in which a condensing vapour is the working fluid. He served as the first President of the Institute of Engineers in Scotland.

Charity that helps disabled people moving into Tollcross
Remploy, which helps thousands of disabled people across the UK find work every year, has announced it will set up the new store in Tollcross next year. A former shop on Earl Grey Street will be transformed into a new facility providing information and training to people with disabilities. A spokeswoman for the organisation said: “We are delighted to have been granted permission for our Edinburgh centre.” Source: Edinburgh Evening News
