Today in History

1754: Golf was formalised at St Andrews with the foundation of the St Andrews Society of Golfers. Twenty-two ‘Noblemen and Gentlemen’ contributed to a silver club to be played for annually over the Links of St Andrews. The first winner was Baillie William Landale, a St Andrews merchant, who became Captain for the year.

All competitors receive a race goody bag
People training Edinburgh Bicycle Triathalon - Royal Commonwealth Pool & Holyrood Park

The New Year's Day, Edinburgh Bicycle Triathlon is a race for everyone; a fun race for those who have never done a triathlon before (about a third of participants are first-timers) and a competitive test of winter fitness for experienced athletes in one of the most beautiful urban settings.

All competitors receive a race goody bag and every finisher is in with a chance to win the lucky dip prize of £500 once you complete the course: swim 400 metres, cycle 11 miles and run 3 ½ miles.

As in previous years the race was massively over-subscribed and entries are now closed! However, supporters and spectators are welcome and can watch free of charge.

The race kicks off at 12:30pm.

Iron Kids Duathlon

But it's not just about adults! Also running with be the Iron Kids Duathlon, a run-bike-run duathlon in Holyrood Park. It's a chance for the Triathletes of the future to show their potential! This race is meant to be fun but it is still a good challenge to start the year with. This race is open to all children between that ages of 8 and 15 on the day of the race. It comprises a 600m run, 2 mile bike, 600m run. The roads along the course are closed and the race is well marshalled. All particpants get a goodie bag.

So how do I enter?

Entries can be taken on the morning but it really helps if you enter online here so we know how many athletes to expect!

The Iron Kids race kicks off at 11:30pm. Please note that participating children must wear a cycle helmet.
