1754:
Golf was formalised at St Andrews with the foundation of the St Andrews Society of Golfers. Twenty-two ‘Noblemen and Gentlemen’ contributed to a silver club to be played for annually over the Links of St Andrews. The first winner was Baillie William Landale, a St Andrews merchant, who became Captain for the year.

Scottish FA President George Peat and Chief Executive Gordon Smith are at the Amsterdam Hilton today as Scotland, Netherlands, Norway, Macedonia and Iceland decided on fixture dates for the forthcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

Scottish FA President George Peat commented on the fixtures agreed: ‘We believe that these set of fixtures give us the best chance possible of securing qualification for the 2010 world cup. We are happy that we have no games during our close season and have the final two games at home. There is always a certain amount of compromise involved in these meetings, but we are satisfied with the outcome.’ Source: Scottish Football Association
