Grassmarket feeling a little bit left out
A MINI winter fire festival is to take place in The Grassmarket to entice Christmas shoppers away from Princes Street.
The 45-minute show, organised by traders and the Beltane Fire Society, will feature fire juggling, tribal drumming and fire-eating. The Drum 'n' Flames event was set up to try to draw Christmas shoppers into The Grassmarket, where traders say they feel "left out" from the main hub of the city's winter festival taking place along Princes Street. Shops and restaurants in the Grassmarket have also had to deal with the disruption of a £5.1 million revamp, which started in September and is not likely to finish until the end of next year. Fawns Reid, secretary of the Grassmarket Traders Association, said: "There is a feeling that The Grassmarket gets a little bit left out of things at this time of year because of all the festivities on Princes Street, and we want to try to put on some events to bring people back here."
"It's only something small, but hopefully it will get quite a crowd, and it will also be something interesting for people to see if they have just come here to shop. The Grassmarket is such a beautiful place at this time of year." The Beltane Fire Society saw crowds of up to 8000 turn out for both its summer festival on Calton Hill and the Samhuinn event on the Royal Mile in October. The Drums 'n' Flames event will take place in the Grassmarket on Saturday 15th December from 4.30pm. Source: Santa, Edinburgh Evening News
