1870:
David Octavius Hill, pioneering Scottish photographer, died. Born in 1802, Hill is often credited with being the first person to use photography as an aid to painting. Together with Robert Adamson he produced more than 1,500 photo-portraits of Scotland's great and good.

Season of Christmas films is to be shown at the Filmhouse
A SEASON of Christmas films is to be shown at the Edinburgh Filmhouse.
Home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, it is screening a digital restoration of the classic Christmas movie It's a Wonderful Life. For the younger audience, there is the 1966 big-budget adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, and two showings of animator Raymond Briggs's Christmas trilogy - The Snowman, Father Christmas and The Bear.
