1870:
David Octavius Hill, pioneering Scottish photographer, died. Born in 1802, Hill is often credited with being the first person to use photography as an aid to painting. Together with Robert Adamson he produced more than 1,500 photo-portraits of Scotland's great and good.

This year’s display features over 700 performers
The Annual Christmas Gymnastics Display takes place at Meadowbank Stadium on Saturday 1st December 2007 from 11.00 – 15.00.
We are delighted to welcome all performers, coaches and spectators to our 6th Annual Christmas Display – our biggest and best yet. This year’s display will feature the talents of over 700 performers from across our centres and clubs, plus those of our very special guests. The event is a perfect opportunity for all performers to showcase the hardwork and commitment they have put in throughout the year. Edinburgh Leisure are committed to getting every child, from tot to teenager, active in Edinburgh. Last year's display had a 1,500 strong sell-out crowd and this year's event is well on course to be the same. Edinburgh Leisure's Development Officer, Perrotine Orr, said prior to the event: "It's our aim to get tots to teenagers tumbling through providing a quality range of coaching programmes and this is their chance to show everyone what they can do!"
