William Rankine, the engineer and physicist, was born. Rankine is noted for his work in thermodynamics. He devised the 'Rankine Cycle', a theoretical ideal process for the operation of turbines and steam engines, in which a condensing vapour is the working fluid. He served as the first President of the Institute of Engineers in Scotland.

Complaints from public leads to new initiative
Offenders abusing the Greenways system in Edinburgh are being targeted in a new initiative. Evening patrols of the five Greenways routes in the city will be carried out by the Traffic Support Wardens from Lothian and Borders Police from Monday night (May 21st). The routes are:
Attention will be given to double red line parking offences, which all have a 24-hour enforcement period. The offence carries a £30 fixed penalty ticket and the vehicle is liable to be immediately impounded. Inspector David Legge, of Lothian and Borders Road Policing Branch, said: "Parking on these double red lines at any time can create a serious danger to all our city road users. In these situations, pedestrians and cyclists are particularly exposed to moving traffic where the driver can be unsighted and has to deviate from a proper course. "The selfish actions of these illegal parkers compromise the public's expectation of safer roads and safer communities at all times." Source: Lothian and Borders Police
