Golf was formalised at St Andrews with the foundation of the St Andrews Society of Golfers. Twenty-two ‘Noblemen and Gentlemen’ contributed to a silver club to be played for annually over the Links of St Andrews. The first winner was Baillie William Landale, a St Andrews merchant, who became Captain for the year.

Supporters have already snapped up nearly 30,000 tickets
After Saturday's thrilling 3-1 win over Lithuania and now a historic 1-0 victory over France in the Parc des Princes.
The next instalment in Scotland's bid to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals will be the visit of Ukraine to Hampden Park on Saturday 13th October. Scotland Supporters Club members snapped up nearly 30,000 tickets for this match and the remaining public sale tickets sold out early at the Hampden Park Museum Shop and the SECC Scotland ticket hotline today.
