Today in History

1747: American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

The Gaelic Society annual concert, with English precis

Press Release

The Gaelic Society of Inverness annual concert supported this year by The National Trust for Scotland.

The Gaelic Society of Inverness 2007 concert is entitled ‘Bliadha Thearlaich – the story of the ’45 through song and music’ and will be held at The Ironworks, Academy Street, Inverness on Friday 28th September at 7.30pm.

This year’s concert is supported by The National Trust for Scotland in recognition of the new Culloden visitor centre and exhibition opening later this year as part of Highland 2007.

Featuring some of the Gaidhealtachd’s leading singers with Jacobite songs of the ‘45, and with music and verse, the concert will be recorded by the BBC Craoladh nan Gàidheal for transmission later in the year.

Whilst the event will appropriately be presented in Gaelic, an English language precis will be screened continuously during the performance so non-Gaelic speakers will be able to understand and enjoy the event to the full.

Tickets are available at The Ironworks, Inverness on 0871 7894173 or online at www.ironworksvenue.com. Tickets cost £12.00 (£10.00 for concessions) and £5.00 for young people still at school. Further information is available at The Gaelic Society of Inverness website at www.gsi.org.uk and www.nts.org.uk/culloden.
