Death Proof
Tarantino’s latest has already generated plenty of column inches. Initially part of the Grindhouse project with fellow director Roberto Rodriguez, the terrific Death Proof more than warrants a release in its own right.

Once
A Sundance smash, director John Carney’s extraordinary musical follows the love affair between a Dublin musician and a Romanian immigrant. Glen Hansard, lead singer of Irish band The Frames, turns in a terrific debut performance.

I Served the King of England
It took almost three decades for legendary Czech director Jiri Menzel to get his adaptation of Bohumil Hrabal’s novel onto the big screen, and the results are spectacular. An absolute must-see.

Protagonist
A film like no other at this year’s Festival. Director Jessica Yu draws the real-life stories of four disparate characters into an utterly absorbing narrative. Variety’s John Anderson called it, “a must-see among doc fans and art film cinephiles.”

Razzle Dazzle: A Journey into Dance
Scripted by Ricky Gervais cohort Robin Ince, Razzle Dazzle made our top comedies list. Brit actor Ben Miller steals the show as Mr. Jonathan in this relentlessly hilarious comedy.

In Search of a Midnight Kiss
Audience word of mouth made this American indie gem an EIFF sell-out. Scoot McNairy and Sara Simmonds shine in the lead roles as the odd couple who meet through a personals ad.

The Counterfeiters
Nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlinale, The Counterfeiters is the true-life tale of a group of imprisoned conmen, artists and bankers who were forced to forge banknotes for the Nazis during WWII. Utterly gripping.

Tekkonkinkreet
The first Japanese manga to be written and directed for the screen by Americans, Tekkonkinkreet is a spectacular success. Stunning visual style and a great storyline make this animation for adults.
