1814:
'Waverley', by Sir Walter Scott, was published. Waverley was Scott's first novel, and written mainly as a way of proving himself a superior literary talent to Byron. Although it was published anonymously, it was an open secret who the author was. The book was a runaway success and Scott became regarded as the leading author in Europe.

Firefighters called to blaze in Tollcross...
A busy road was closed during the rush hour after a fire broke out in the roof of an office block.
Firefighters were called to the blaze on Earl Grey Street, Tollcross at 4.36pm. Three pumping appliances and a height appliance sent from Tollcross and Sighthill were being used to fight the fire in the roof of one of the buildings. Shops on either side of the building were evacuated and closed for the rest of the day. A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade said: "This was not a big fire, but it was quite complicated because of the circumstances. No-one was injured."
