American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Appeal for witnesses after 19-year-old woman assaulted
Police are appealing for witnesses after a 19-year-old woman was indecently assaulted in Edinburgh yesterday (August 12th). The incident happened at around 1am, in Charles Street. The woman was walking along Charles Street towards George Square when she was approached by two men, who started chatting to her. Shortly after one of the men indecently assaulted her, and she screamed. Both men then made off towards Potterow. The first suspect is described as white, 25 to 30-years-old, 5ft 10ins tall, medium build, dark blond short spiky hair, and wearing a white shirt and jeans. The second man is described as white, 6ft 2ins tall, stocky build, short dark hair, and wearing a white shirt and jeans. A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: 'This was a disturbing incident, which caused the young woman a considerable amount of distress. 'We would like anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident, or saw anything suspicious, to come forward with information.'
