1747: American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Hibs get chance to re-live dream win...

CIS League Cup Final winners Hibernian Football Club will get the chance to re-live their dream win at a Civic Reception on Tuesday 31st July.

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost and other city leaders will toast the winning team at the first ever civic reception held at the Council’s newly refurbished Lothian Chambers on George IV Bridge.

There were jubilant scenes around Easter Road after their triumph over Kilmarnock at Hampden Park on 18th March.

Lord Provost the Right Hon George Grubb said: “The City is tremendously proud of Hibernian’s success in the CIS League Cup. Judging by the celebrations afterwards, the victory clearly meant a huge amount to the Club’s fans who have stood by them for many years.

“Hibernian has a special role in Edinburgh and is held in great affection by many in the city and across Scotland. Now the immediate celebrations have passed, this is our chance to properly thank all the players and members of the club for their hard work and dedication in achieving this victory.

Hibernian Chairman Rod Petrie said: “While we are now embarking on a new season, with new challenges ahead including the defence of the CIS League Cup which begins in August, the Cup Final win in March was a proud and special day for everyone at the Club. We are delighted the City Council has invited us along to celebrate the achievement.”
