Today in History

1747: American naval hero John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Residents planning to transform a Georgian green space

RESIDENTS planning to transform a Georgian green space to its former glory are appealing for photographs of how it looked in its heyday.

In particular, the Friends of Gardner's Crescent need pictures of the decorative cast iron railings and ornate gate that once protected the Fountainbridge parkland.

The railings were torn down to provide raw materials for the Second World War efforts.

Plans to transform the park also include replacing rundown benches and planting new trees.

The group has applied for funding to finance the project.

Cllr Gordon Buchan

Local councillor Gordon Buchan said: "This is a wonderful scheme as it is the only real bit of green space in the Fountainbridge area.

"It would be great if anyone who has pictures of the garden from the 1920s or 1930s would come forward to help out."
