Police believe a man who died days after being found collapsed with a head injury in Edinburgh may have been the victim of an assault.

James Glendenning, 29 years, was discovered lying on a pavement in London Road around 1.40pm on Wednesday 4th July. He was on the grassy side of the road opposite Windsor Street. He is described as male, white, 5'10", slim build, long brown hair, clean shaven.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and then transferred to the Western General Hospital but died on 10th July as a result of his injuries.

Police made an appeal on that day to try and trace two people who came to his aid, a female student nurse and another man. Neither has yet come forward but police believe they may have vital information.

Detective Inspector Richard Thomas said: "We are very keen to trace a woman, who we believe was a student nurse, and a man who helped look after Mr Glendenning before ambulance staff arrived. They could have vital information about what they saw.

"We are now treating his death as suspicious as we believe he may have been the victim of an assault. An incident room has been set up at Gayfield Square police station.

"We would urge anyone who knows Mr Glendenning or thinks they may have seen him prior to his admission to hospital to get in touch.

"We need to build up a picture of what he was doing and who he was with in the 24 hour period before he was discovered lying injured in London Road.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone else who may have seen what happened or was in the area of London Road on 4 July.

"The young woman, who we think was a student nurse, is described as in her 20's with short dark hair and a yellow t-shirt. A man also came to assist before the ambulance arrived."
