Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh. Conan Doyle achieved literary fame as the creator of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh University and the character of Holmes is said to be based on one of his medical teachers, Dr Joseph Bell.

Police appeal after 13-year-old reported missing - Updated 9th July 2007
Police are appealing for information about a 13-year-old girl missing from home since 3rd July. Robyn Ferrigan was last seen boarding a bus in Newington Road heading into town at around 11.30am on Tuesday. She is described as white, 5'02" tall, of medium build with shoulder length dirty blonde hair. When she went missing she was wearing a pale blue and white Fred Perry jumper, cream combat trousers and white trainers. A police spokeswoman said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have seen or heard from Robyn Ferrigan in the last few days. She is very young to be away from home and police are concerned for her welfare." Anyone with information is asked to contact Lothian and Borders police on 0131 311 3131 or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111. Missing girl home safe A TEENAGE girl who disappeared from her Edinburgh home for four days has been found safe and well. Robyn Ferrigan, 13, went missing from her home in Howdenhall last Tuesday but was traced by police on Saturday in the city centre.
