1814:
'Waverley', by Sir Walter Scott, was published. Waverley was Scott's first novel, and written mainly as a way of proving himself a superior literary talent to Byron. Although it was published anonymously, it was an open secret who the author was. The book was a runaway success and Scott became regarded as the leading author in Europe.

Edinburgh city centre will go Bavarian this weekend
Chiemsee Fest (Pronounced Keem-zay) launches on Friday and will give Edinburgh residents the chance to sample weißwurst, brezel bread and beer whilst being entertained by traditional music and dance from the southern German state. Edinburgh has been twinned with Bavaria’s capital Munich since 1954. The relationship with the area was given a boost in April when an air link between Edinburgh and Munich was launched by Easyjet. Chiemsee Fest is part of a Scotland wide initiative to develop links with the Bavaria to exchange ideas and promote business. Bavarians were given a similar taste of what Edinburgh has to offer in an event which took place in Munich on 20th June.
Ahead of the launch where he will represent the Lord Provost, Rob Munn of the City of Edinburgh Council said:
“Edinburgh has a vital role to play in the development of Scotland’s relationship with Bavaria. Our twin city status with Munich and the new air link out of our airport gives Edinburgh a great opportunity to become a business and tourism hub for visitors from Southern Germany.”
Minister for Europe, External Affairs & Culture, Linda Fabiani said:
The launch of Chiemsee Fest will take place on Castle Street at 10.45am on Friday 6th July. The event will be launched by Bavarian State Secretary Dr Otmar Bernhard, Minister for Europe, External Affairs & Culture Linda Fabiani and Rob Munn who will represent the Lord Provost at the launch. Chiemsee Fest can be visited during the following times over the weekend:
