1713: The Enlightenment painter, Allan Ramsay was born. His father was another Allan Ramsay, well known for his poetry. After studying in Italy, Allan Jr. became renowned as one of the best portrait painters of the Rococo era, and painted subjects as important as the future King George III.

    THE winners of this year's Tollcross garden competition

THE winners of this year's Tollcross garden competition have been revealed.

Organised by the community council, the competition highlights the efforts of residents to transform their front gardens.

The best garden on show was judged to be the one at 110A Lauriston Place, which also won the best patio garden.

The most colourful garden was at 24 Gillespie Crescent, while the best ecological garden was at 3 Glen Street.
