Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh. Conan Doyle achieved literary fame as the creator of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh University and the character of Holmes is said to be based on one of his medical teachers, Dr Joseph Bell.

Appeal for information to catch man in the Merchiston area
The incident happened at around 6:10pm on Monday July 2nd, at the footpath that runs alongside the Union Canal near Harrison Place. A man and a woman were walking along the towpath from Viewforth when they saw the suspect walking towards them with his trousers round his ankles. He then stopped in front of the pair and exposed himself. The suspect is described as white, aged between 17-18 years, and around 5ft 7in - 5ft 8in tall. He had short, dark brown hair, and was wearing a white and navy thick strip T-shirt with collar and black trousers. After exposing himself he walked off towards Yeaman Place. A police spokesman said: "We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at this time and witnessed the incident to contact us."
