The first steamboat experiment was held on Dalswinton Loch. Robert Burns was farming at Ellisland, just outside Dumfries, when he was invited by his landlord, Patrick Miller, to go out in a small experimental steamboat. The boat, which was fitted with an engine designed by William Symington, was the first paddle-propelled steamboat in the world.

Man robbed at cash machine on Morningside Road
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was robbed in Morningside Road, Edinburgh on Saturday (April 5th). At about 12.50pm, the 30-year-old victim had stopped at the cash machine at the corner of Spring Valley Gardens, and was about to use it, when two men approached him. He was threatened and one of the men demanded he hand over his wallet. The men then emptied the wallet of a small amount of cash before heading off down Morningside Road. One of the men is described as being Asian, in his late 20s, 5ft 9ins tall with short dark hair. He was wearing a white parka jacket with a big hood and jeans. The other is white, in his late 20s, 5ft 9ins tall with short dark hair, and was wearing a red puffa jacket. A police spokeswoman said: 'Although not hurt, this robbery has left the victim considerably shaken. This happened in broad daylight at a time when there would have been a number of vehicles and pedestrians in the area. We would appeal for anyone who was in the area and saw something suspicious to contact police.'
