Council forestry department called to clear drive
Large branches from a tree came crashing down onto Melville Drive at its junction with Summerhall. Police from the, newly formed, Road Policing Division closed the road between Summerhall and Argyll Terrace at 3.40pm and set-up a diversion along Melville Terrace. Workmen from the Councils' Forrestry Section then got to work to make the area safe. Firstly making live wires from a streetlamp which was put out of commission by the branches as they fell. Derek Triplett, Manager of the Forestry Section in the City of Edinburgh Council Services for Communities worked for 2 hours swinging through the canopy cutting off broken and damaged branches from the tree. Derek worked in gale force winds and driving rain. Nobody was hurt despite this being a very busy junction for vehicles, cyclists and parents taking their children to the new Magnet Park on the East Meadows. The fact that the weather was very bad had kept the area clear of pedestrians. After Derek and Billy had cleared away the broken branches and made the area safe the Police re-opend the road at 5.20pm. Previous Tollcross Articles Source: David Rintoul, Tollcross, Edinburgh
